A Nursing Home Negligence Horror Story

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

A 77 year old grandmother had developed severe dementia and the decision was made to place her in a nursing home. Her daughter placed her mother in the Southwood Nursing Center in the state of Florida, thinking that the facility would take of her. Unfortunately for the grandmother, she was sexually assauletd by another resident that was 83 years old.

The 83 year old male had been placed in the home, when he was found wandering the streets. A Florida court had declared him a vulnerable adult, in need of protective services. It was later found out that the culprit had a criminal file that was 13 pages long, which included 59 arrests. Some of the charges included child molestation and sexual assault.

Unfortunately, most nursing home sexual abuse cases are never reported. There could be a number of different reasons why this is a sad reality. A resident might not want to come forward, because of generational beliefs about sex. Most times the abused victim feels ashamed by the incident. They may also be unsure of how to define the sexual act, but are aware that it makes them feel uncomfortable. Another reason could be that the patient may have no one to speak to, or because of their mental state think that no one will believe their story.

If you believe that a friend or family member may have been sexually assaulted at a facility, the next step to take is to talk to a nursing home negligence lawyer.

A lawsuit will not only provide compensation for the victim, it will also act as a safeguard in our society to ensure that proper standards are followed in the nursing home industry. A nursing home negligence lawyer will see to it that that justice is served and that the guilty will pay.
